Privacy Policy
Last updated August 2, 2026
This policy covers both the Aboutwine app for iPhone and iPad and the aboutwine.app website. We do not run ads, we do not track you across other apps or websites, and we do not sell your data — not now, not later.
The app
Your account
You sign in with Sign in with Apple, or continue as a guest. When you use Sign in with Apple we receive the identifier Apple issues for you and, if you choose to share it, your name and email address — including Apple’s private relay address if you hide your real one. We use it to keep your cellar attached to you across devices, and for nothing else.
What you create in the app
We store the wines and wineries you save, the ratings and tasting notes you write, and your scan history. This is your cellar; it exists to be shown back to you.
Camera, photos and label scanning
Scanning asks for access to your camera, or to a photo you pick from your photo library. The photo of the label is sent to our servers and to the AI model that reads it so the wine can be identified, and the image is stored with that scan in your history so you can look back at it. Deleting a scan deletes its photo. We do not scan, index or use your photo library for anything else.
Location
If you allow it, we use your approximate location to show wines and places near you. It is used for that request and is not stored as a location history. You can decline, and the rest of the app works normally.
The AI sommelier
Questions you ask the sommelier, and the wine context attached to them, are sent to our servers and to our AI model provider to generate an answer. We count how many messages you send each day to enforce the free and Premium limits. Your conversations are not used to advertise to you.
Subscriptions
Aboutwine Premium is purchased through Apple. Apple processes the payment and we never see your card details. We work with RevenueCat to confirm whether your subscription is active — they receive the purchase identifiers needed to do that.
The website
If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect the email address you give us and store it on Cloudflare’s infrastructure. Our servers also record the routine technical details that come with any web request — approximate country, browser type and referring page — which we use to understand interest and prevent abuse. This site sets no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies; any storage it uses is strictly to make the site work.
Who else sees your data
We share data only with the providers that make the app run: Cloudflare (hosting and image storage), Neon (database), our AI model provider (label reading and sommelier answers), Apple (sign-in and payments) and RevenueCat (subscription status). They process it on our behalf under their own terms. We do not sell personal data, and there are no advertising or analytics trackers in the app.
Your choices
You can delete your account — and everything attached to it — from Settings → Delete account inside the app. It is permanent. You can also delete individual scans, notes and saved bottles at any time, unsubscribe from any email we send, or write to privacy@aboutwine.app to ask for a copy of your data or its deletion. We’ll honor the request promptly.
Children
AboutWine is intended for adults of legal drinking age. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under the legal drinking age in their country.
Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll update the date above. Material changes will be announced in the app or by email.
